    FolderShare is invaluable...

    by Jame

It seems that I've been using FolderShare for almost two years.

FolderShare is (now) a Microsoft product that facilitates "over-the-web" syncing of files/folders between Windows devices and even between users.  (Here is "How It Works")

I started looking into it to keep my home computer sync'ed with my work laptop.  That way I could have copies of documents to work on at home.  It worked okay, but seemed to have problems as my "My Documents" folder was huge (7GB).

Well, I'm still using it and loving it, and more since I figured how to make it work better:  Instead of sync'ing my entire "My Documents" folder I only chose select subfolders that were important such as "Personal", "Business", "My Zinio Library" (which has all my downloaded Zinio magazines), "My Weblog Posts" (which contains all my draft and posted publications from my Windows Live Writer).

I'm going to start exploring ways that I might be able to:

    • Sync Preferences.  Maybe syncing specific sub-folders in my "Application Data" folder (i.e. C:\Documents and Settings\%User%\Application Data).  Is this a bad idea?
    • Sync Media Types.  For instance try to sync only my iTunes Audiobooks and Podcasts, since there is no easy way to manage podcast subscriptions across multiple devices.

A few things I'd love to see them work on (though I haven't seen any updates in almost two years) is:

    • File Type Filtering.  That way I can specify to sync a folder, but filter out unwanted file types (or maybe sync only specific file types).
    • Last X Modified/Created.  Syncing only the last X number of files by "modified" or "created" date.  That way I can choose to sync only the last 400 photos, rather than syncing more than 40GB of photos.  Maybe this could also be by file size (rather than by number of files) so you can specify to sync the last 20MB of recently added/modified files.

I now there are other options out there, but this one seems to do very well for my purposes and is very cost effective (it's free).

BTW - It also supports sharing with authenticated "friends" or even remote web access to the files (assuming at least one of your devices is online).
