Windows Live Writer: Feature Request (for Draft Posts)...

    by Jame

    Just throwing this out there...

I have quite enjoyed working with Windows Live Writer for the past couple weeks.  So much so in fact that I uninstalled a couple of other very good (but not quite as good) desktop blog editors.

Anyway, a very simple feature request:

When I go to "open" a post, it would be nice if the icons would indicate somehow if the post was a draft or was published.  For instance, because I have Live Writer installed on two of my laptops and my desktop system, I've come into the habit of posting a draft onto one of my blogs so that I can open it again on another device at another time.  The problem is that it isn't immediately obvious which ones are unpublished drafts when I open by blog.

If you plan on using Live Writer like this you should be aware that it uses locally cached versions of a post/draft once they've been created.

    E.g.

    1) Create a post on machine A, publish as a draft.
    2) Open on machine B, make changes.

If you reopen the post on machine A) you'll see the changes that were made on machine B do not exist. This occurs even if you view the contents of the blog instead of the 'draft posts' list.

The cause is WLW stores a copy of posts in 'My Documents\My Weblog Posts', and will always open the local copy if it matches a post on the blog. A workaround is to delete the local copy and then open from the blog.

Andrew: Thanks so much for that comment. It would have taken a lot of experimentation (and likely a little frustration) to figure it out.

    Thanks.

I too am really starting to like Windows Live Writer. Another feature request I have is the ability to specify a "post slug" for my WordPress postings. For those who don't know what a post slug is:
'This is where WordPress will "clean up" your post title to create a link, if you are using Permalinks. The commas, quotes, apostrophes, and other non-HTML favorable characters are changed and a dash is put between each word. If your title is "My Site - Here's Lookin' at You, Kid", it will be cleaned up to be "my-site-heres-lookin-at-you-kid" as the title. You can manually change this, maybe shortening it to "my-site-lookin-at-you-kid".'

What is the world record for most posts in a day? You must have come close yesterday!
