    Choose unlocked and supported...

    by Jame (personal)

Okay, so this is a cheeky response to Boris' post on "unlocked and open"... but after all I am the "Microsoft guy", and he promised not to hold it against me...

Anyway, I'm thrilled with my i-mate Jam.  Although the last couple of ROM updates have been a ride not for the faint of heart, I get the ability to have a fully* integrated experience with my Tablet PC (Windows XP Tablet Edition) which is fully integrated to our Office 2003 and Windows Server 2003 environment at work (... and my soon to be acquired Windows Media Center at home...).

Why do I like my PocketPC (Phone Edition, by the way)?  Well, it's just darn pretty... and it is very functional.  The Microsoft VoiceCommand Software is "idiot proof" (I'm living proof), allowing me to make calls while simultaneously being a hazard on four wheels on the streets of Vancouver.  Fairly seemless Bluetooth support for a wireless headset mitigates the risk of human life loss during the course of a typical day.  There is tons of software available ...

Buying wireless smart stuff? Choose unlocked and open

Whoops! I was answering a different set of requirements (specifically, Blackberry vs. Treo as the only two choices) and Alex picked a Treo. She actually mentioned it on the phone again today, and I still didn't get that she was talking about *my* post as the impetus for her switch...

From the universe of all smart phone/PDA choices, I'm currently liking the Nokia/Symbian Series60 platform. I also quite liked my Sony Ericsson, and the P910 is a pretty good device. The Palm is still an open platform, and my main point is to go unlocked and open, whatever device you choose.

Anyway... that's my two bits.  I won't hold it against Boris for being blinded by anti-Microsoft bias... ;)

Whoops..truncated: Good things about PocketMac, that is.

And...turn on your "drupal" module so I don't have to create an account :P

Actually, I didn't recommend *against* any Microsoft stuff...I just insisted on unlocked and open, which I think your i-Mate meets. That is, it's open to put other apps on it etc. and is unlocked in that it has a SIM card so you can use it with any GSM carrier.

A PocketPC-based platform wouldn't make any sense for me since I don't have the other half of that seamless integration. Although, I have heard good things about

I know... I just thought I'd take the opportunity for some good ol' fashion ribbing!  So when are we getting together for a beer?
